  10. WHAT IS VDS?
  11. ------------
  12. VDS (Virus Detection System) is a comprehensive anti-virus package for
  13. IBM PC compatible computers running MS/PC DOS 3.0 and higher. It contains
  14. a set of well-designed tools that offer detection and easy removal of PC 
  15. viruses. VDS is the result of more than five years of research in the field 
  16. of computer viruses. Unlike many other packages, VDS includes many advanced
  17. features such as "decoy launching", self-recovery, and real-time anti-virus
  18. monitoring to deal with both old and new viruses in an effective manner.

  20. COMPATIBILITY and NETWORK SUPPORT
  21. ---------------------------------
  22. VDS is Novell Netware-aware. It is not confused by dynamic drive mappings. 
  23. It recognizes Netware server volumes. What this means is that instead of 
  24. creating an integrity database for each mapped drive letter, you can create 
  25. one for each volume. Even if the mappings change, you can still use the 
  26. database for that volume.
  27.  
  28. MULTI-LEVEL INTEGRITY STRUCTURE
  29. -------------------------------
  30. An important but less evident enhancement is the addition of a catalog
  31. system to maintain a flexible and multi-level integrity structure. Now you 
  32. can create fingerprints for drives as well as subdirectories. And if you do 
  33. not have a database for a subdirectory, you can still use an upper level
  34. database to verify the integrity of programs in that directory. In other
  35. words, if you wish to verify only the files in the DOS directory and you 
  36. have created a fingerprint only for the whole drive, you can simply highlight 
  37. the DOS directory and choose verify; VDS will do the rest. This approach
  38. makes more sense since an upper level database contains all the integrity
  39. info for the programs that reside in the lower levels of the directory tree.
  40. VDS can track up to a 32 different integrity databases easily! If you have
  41. some extended memory available, each integrity database can store up to
  42. 16000 fingerprints for programs.

  44. EASY INSTALLATION FOR NETWORKS
  45. ------------------------------
  46. We have received many requests to implement a simpler installation procedure
  47. for networked environments. System administrators voiced their concerns
  48. about having to go to each workstation to install. They wanted a package that
  49. can be installed from the server down onto the workstation during login. We 
  50. have listened. In this release, VDS 3.0 allows the installation to be part of
  51. the login procedure. It automatically determines the system parameters needed
  52. for a given workstation and loads itself onto the local hard drive if VDS is 
  53. not already installed. The system administrator can further customize the 
  54. operation of VDS by simply editing the default configuration file.
  55.  
  56. FLEXIBLE CONFIGURATION
  57. ----------------------
  58. Yet another new feature is the addition of a configuration file in the spirit
  59. of Windows(tm) .INI files. This approach facilitates maintenance of several
  60. configurations based on different needs. You can now keep all your integrity
  61. data on a floppy diskette, for example. Furthermore, you can specify which
  62. files are to be checked based on their extensions. VDS 3.0 can be used
  63. to verify the integrity of data files as well as programs.

  65. OBJECT-ORIENTED USER INTERFACE
  66. ------------------------------
  67. The most visible change in VDS 3.0 is the revamped user interface. We 
  68. think that it is one of the most functional user interfaces implemented in
  69. any anti-viral we have seen. Judge for yourself and please let us know if
  70. there are any other areas that would help make it even simpler. The main
  71. idea behind the new facelift is shifting the emphasis from action-oriented
  72. menus to object-oriented menus. No, we are not talking about polymorphism
  73. and all that jazz! It goes like this: There are certain objects to manipulate
  74. such as drives, directories, and files. The user concentrates on those. Then
  75. there are certain actions applied to those objects such as scanning, 
  76. verification, and initialization. One-keystroke operations using the function
  77. keys are displayed at the bottom of the screen as a reminder. There is 
  78. almost nothing to remember! Learn the concepts, and don't worry about the 
  79. trivial details. If you need help, just press the F1 key. By shifting the 
  80. focus from actions to objects, VDS provides a more natural interface that
  81. many people seem to prefer.

  83. UNUSUAL FEATURES
  84. ----------------
  85. Unusual features such as decoy launching are still present and they are even
  86. more elaborate now. You can launch a decoy in any directory you wish! We 
  87. cleaned half of our virus zoo using this operation.

  89. Yet another unusual feature we have added is generic virus cleaning. This
  90. technique allows VDS to restore infected programs to their original
  91. state by using the integrity information. As the name suggests, the cleaning
  92. operation is generic and does not depend on knowing which virus attacked the 
  93. file. Overwriting viruses obviously cannot be removed this way (or any other
  94. way besides restoration using originals). We had good success with most of 
  95. the appending viruses that attach themselves to the programs without 
  96. destroying the contents of the original file. After the restoration attempt, 
  97. VDS double-checks the recovered program to see that it is exactly as the 
  98. original. If this is not the case, it recommends restoration using clean 
  99. backup copies, which is always the safest and the recommended solution.

  101. MORE MODERN SCANNING
  102. --------------------
  103. Perhaps the most perceptible improvement is the increased scanning speed in
  104. VDS 3.0. We implemented a more modern scanning technique based on the
  105. combination of the Shift-AND technique and hashing. The nice thing about this
  106. approach is that the speed is only slightly affected even if you add many 
  107. new signatures.

  109. MEMORY-RESIDENT SCANNER (Not available in unregistered shareware release)
  110. -----------------------
  111. Due to popular demand, we have added a new component to VDS package:
  112. VDSTSR (late release of VDS 1.0 also included VDSTSR). This is a 
  113. memory-resident virus scanner that checks each program before execution or 
  114. copy operation for known viruses. The program weighs in at 28K, but it can 
  115. be loaded high easily under DOS 5.0 and later versions as well as other 
  116. popular memory managers that provide upper memory blocks.

  118. MORE NETWORK SUPPORT (Not available in unregistered shareware release)
  119. --------------------
  120. To help out the network administrators, we are providing a utility called
  121. ISVDSTSR (a 17-byte program) that returns a DOS error level depending on
  122. whether VDSTSR is loaded in memory. By checking the error level in a batch
  123. file, the system administrator can implement several solutions to protect
  124. the LAN. For example, he/she can display a warning message and deny access
  125. until the user enables VDSTSR. What's even better is that he/she can load
  126. a copy of VDSTSR from the server at the time of login; this way, even if a
  127. user does not comply with the policy of having VDSTSR loaded on the 
  128. workstation, the system administrator can have it his/her way!
